SAPC intervenes in community during Nelson Mandela Day
[dt_gap height=”20″]
2018 Proclaims the Centenary of Nelson Mandela’s birth. In honour of his legacy the South African Pharmacy Council celebrated his prestigious existence by being part of the change. The spirit of Nelson Mandela Day encourages our intervention in challenges that affect communities.
A major focus in the international arena at the moment is the cost of sanitary towels and the burden that this cost has on women in poverty stricken areas. Over 2 million South African girls between the ages of 12 and 18 years miss on average 5 days of school a month, amounting to 60 school days a year that are missed. The inability to afford these basic hygiene products has a major effect on these girls’ productivity and mobility. With this in mind, the South African Pharmacy Council staff decided to step in and assist the children of Wozanibone Secondary School in honour of Nelson Mandela’s legacy.
The Council staff came in numbers on Friday, 17 August 2018 and uplifted the children of Wozanibone Secondary School by donating sanitary towels, toiletries, school shoes, socks and beanies, stationery and food items. With the assistance of some of the parents, the Council staff painted the school gates and classrooms and performed other basic maintenance on the school’s infrastructure.
The Council called on the pharmacy profession to take part in this project to eradicate the impact of poverty in the communities they serve, one school child at a time.
