Pharmacy Week 2015

The focus of the 2015 National Pharmacy Week was Chronic Diseases: Take control, and pharmacists all over rose to the occasion.

National Pharmacy Week in September this year was enthusiastically supported by pharmacists around the country, and they took full advantage of the opportunity to champion the profession and the contribution pharmacists make in the health and wellbeing of the people of South Africa.

The 2015 theme, Chronic Diseases: Take Control, was an apt topic considering the Minister of Health’s warning about the alarming increase in chronic diseases over the years. Bright poster displays, informative talks and testing and counselling stations ensured public attention was focused on the pharmacist and how equipped they are to make a difference to the population’s health.

National Pharmacy Week

Pharmacy Week 2015 took place from 1 to 8 September and focused on the theme Chronic Diseases:Take Control.

The promotional material was developed by the Council and its partners, the National Department of Health and the Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa (PSSA).

The SAPC issued a press release on 1 September 2015, and the Registrar, Mr Amos Masango, was available as spokesperson for media interviews.

The Office of the Registrar would like to thank members for the numerous Pharmacy Week participation reports showing pharmacy professionals reaching out to their communities, schools and patients.

We take this opportunity to share some of the Pharmacy Week stories.

Pharmacy Week at Life Vincent Pallotti Hospital.

“Staff welcomed Pharmacy Week by decorating the pharmacy around the theme and putting up posters promoting healthy lifestyle choices with slogans such as “Water first for Thirst”.

We held talks at different wards in the hospital and requested the unit managers to remind their patients to bring their own chronic medications when being admitted to hospital. We also gave advice on ways to decrease the risk of developing a chronic disease by, for example, adopting a healthy lifestyle, avoiding tobacco use, increasing physical activity, achieving optimal weight, improving nutrition, and avoiding sun exposure.”
