2015 nears the end
Yet another year has come and gone, and it’s time to ponder our achievements.

Pharmacy is a dynamic profession. We should continue taking another shot, until things work. A lot of our plans do not materialise, but we need to refocus and give it another shot.
We are very thankful to the Council, which is in their second term, who together with the Office of the Registrar, are working very hard to realise the objects of Council in issues pertaining to education and training, practice, registration and professional conduct, among others. The year 2016 should welcome new qualifications for pharmacy support personnel and, of course, the much anticipated publication of regulations.
World AIDS Day 1 December 2015
World AIDS Day is an international day to raise awareness about HIV and Aids. It is commemorated each year on 1 December and is an opportunity for every community to unite in the fight against HIV, to support those living with HIV, as well as remember those who have died because of AIDS. We are reminded that HIV has not gone away and still remains a challenge. The UNAIDS World AIDS Day theme for 2011 to 2015 is Getting to zero. South Africa focuses on ZERO DISCRIMINATION – zero new HIV infections, zero AIDS related deaths and zero stigma. Members of the pharmacy profession are once more called upon to continue playing a prominent role in making a difference in the lives of the people of our country. Pharmacists should always remember that they are the first point of contact for patients seeking advice and the last point of contact for patients with a prescription. It is for this reason that the patient-pharmacist relationship must remain paramount.
2nd National Pharmacy Conference 2016
The 2nd National Pharmacy Conference is in the offing, and this conference is anticipated to surpass the spectacular 2013 conference. More than 1 300 delegates are expected to attend. The aim of the conference, under the overall theme Moving to Pharmacy 2030 – Shaping the Future, is to share developments in all sectors of pharmacy and move forward as one as we shape the profession. Your participation is very important to us and costs should not be a prohibiting factor. We wish to encourage employers to sponsor their pharmacists’ participation, and we will be negotiating for reduced accommodation rates and, where possible, transport. The venue has already being secured.
We also urge members of the profession to continue providing a superior service to our communities. We assure you that those who hit the mark will always be recognised, in one way or another. In 2016, Council will once again acknowledge the sterling work of deserving professionals and facilities. Almost 17 awards will be given out at the conference, and you still have time to secure a place in the final nominations. This is an opportunity not to be missed. Also remember that your conference expenses might be fully paid for (terms and conditions apply) if you are successful. Check the deadline for nominations and awards criteria in this e-publication. Annual report
The 2014 Annual Report is available on the Council website. This report covers our achievements in 2014 as well as the challenges we faced. It is the new Council’s first annual report and is a worthwhile read that will update you on Council’s business operations in 2014.
Closing remarks
With the festive season and new year around the corner, it is the time of the year to be joyful and merry. Seasons Greetings to all our staff, Councillors and the beloved profession. Have a restful and peaceful festive season.
