As the year comes to a close, most of us will be spending the holiday season with loved ones or going on vacations to unwind on the busy year. This season also presents us with an opportunity to reflect on our activities for the year that was, take pride in our achievements and draw lessons from those activities in which were not successful in accomplishing. This last edition of the Pharmaciae for 2017 is also reflective of our activities for the year and gives a glimpse of what is to come for the pharmacy profession in the coming year.
As we chart our resolutions for the coming year, we urge all pharmacy professionals to finalise plans for participating at the 3rd National Pharmacy Conference in 2019. The South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) is also at an advance stage of ensuring that the logistics of the conference fall seamlessly into place, to ensure that we can have dialogues that take pharmacy towards Vision 2030. This edition also focuses on the pre-registration / internship year of Bachelor of Pharmacy graduates – important information on, among others, continuing professional development, pre-registration examinations and intern/tutor workshops for 2018 is provided.
3rd National Pharmacy Conference
The SAPC is planning the 3rd National Pharmacy Conference in 2019. This conference is to take place at Sun City, North West from 3 to 6 October 2019. As always, this conference will be a gathering of pharmacists and pharmacy support personnel from all sectors of the profession, societies, etc. to have dialogues around developments in the industry, challenges it faces and how to navigate these, as well as to share knowledge and best practises in this ever-changing environment. The ample time that we still have to the conference should allow us to budget for attendance without breaking the bank.
Council election 2018: Exercise your right to vote!
The term of office of the current Council is coming to an end in 2018. The Office of the Registrar has already started planning the Council Elections 2018, which will give pharmacists and pharmacy support personnel around the country an opportunity to elect the next group of Councillors to take the pharmacy profession forward by maintaining a good image for pharmacy, setting standards for Good Pharmacy Practice and Good Pharmacy Education, and protecting the profession from threats such as illegal practices and unethical conduct.
To ensure that you take part in this crucial occasion, please ensure that you update your contact information with the SAPC. These include your cellphone/telephone number, postal address, courier address and email address.
The procedure for Council elections is prescribed in the Regulations relating to the elections of members of the South African Pharmacy Council. Read more in this edition.
World Aids Day December 2017
Pharmacists and pharmacy support personnel are called upon once again to roll up their sleeve and act upon medicine shortages and mismanagement in the health sector, to increase access to treatment and prevention services, and to remember the World Aids Day. The 1st of December is World Aids Day, it is an opportunity for the public and the profession to unite in the fight against HIV, show support for people living with HIV and commemorate those that died from it. The theme for 2017 is “Let Our Actions Count: It Is My Right to Know My Status, Prevention is My Responsibility”. Read more in this edition of Pharmaciae.
SAPC supports the PSSA bid to host the FIP World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Services in 2021
The Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa (PSSA) has submitted a bid to host the 2021 FIP World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in South Africa. The FIP represents more than 3 million pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists through individual membership, member organisations and academic institutions. This congress is hosted annually at a different location, however, it has never been hosted in a sub-Saharan African country before. The SAPC has supported the PSSA in principle to host the 2021 FIP World Congress in Cape Town.
Pharmacy is an essential service that never goes on holiday, we wish all pharmacy professionals a joyful festive season and urge those who will be on duty during the festive season to stay alert and continue serving patients with care.
