Fridge warning system
In Volume 21 issue No 2 (December 2013) of the Pharmaciae, the Office of the Registrar published an article on the fridge warning system, a requirement stipulated in the Rules relating to good pharmacy practice.
It has come to Council’s attention that the profession does not seem to fully understand the purpose of a fridge warning system. It has a dual purpose; to alert the pharmacist to a power failure, or warn of a fridge malfunction.
Refrigeration failure without an interruption in power supply could refer to instances where the fridge door is open or not properly closed, thus affecting the temperature. Power or refrigeration failure will affect the efficacy of the stored medicines, and the warning system enables the pharmacist to come up with an alternative storage plan.
The duty of the pharmacist is to store medicines safely according to specified conditions. By ensuring the fridge is in good working order at all times, the pharmacist will be exercising due diligence in maintaining the safety, efficacy and quality of the medicines.
