Fees not increased for students and pharmacy support learners

In the interest of supporting pharmacy and pharmacy support students, the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) placed a moratorium on annual fee increases paid by learners and students since 2014. At a meeting of SAPC held in October 2017, it was decided that in line with the continued interventions by other entities within the tertiary education sector, including the Minister of Higher Education and the National Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), annual fees paid by students and learners should not increase in 2018.
This decision will not negatively impact the quality of services provided by the SAPC to the education sector. However, the feasibility of continuing the moratorium will have to be assessed annually.
Both the Bachelor of Pharmacy students and pharmacy support learners contribute R213.27 annually (averaging 58 cents per day) towards the provision of education related services by the SAPC, such as the designing of competency standards, qualifications, accreditation of institutions to provide pharmacy education, maintenance of student registers and monitoring of the facilities of education providers’ to ensure quality education.
