Council’s online functionality – Going Green

In 2015, Council introduced an additional online registration process and phased out the manual processes for premises approval, tutor approval and registration as a responsible pharmacist. Guidelines for these processes, and other online processes finalised prior to 2015, are available on the SAPC website on the link http://www.pharmcouncil.co.za/B_CS_Guidelines.asp. Below are some of the verification or checks developed on the system for registration as a responsible pharmacist, premises approval and tutor approval.

For registration as a responsible pharmacist (RP), the system checks:

  • That the pharmacy account is up to date
  • That the RP’s annual fee account is up to date
  • If the applicant is already registered as an RP or a tutor at a different pharmacy, and redirects the applicant to resign first.

For premises approval, the system checks that:

  • The applicant is the registered RP for the pharmacy
  • The pharmacy is Grade A or B
  • The RP has responded to all previous shortcomings
  • The RP’s annual fee account is up to date
  • The pharmacy account is up to date
  • There are no training restrictions.

For tutor approval the system checks that:

  • The pharmacist’s annual fee account is up to date
  • The pharmacy account is up to date
  • The premises are approved for training
  • There is an active RP
  • The applicant (pharmacist) has submitted four CPD entries within the last twelve months
  • The applicant has sufficient years of experience to tutor an intern. If the applicant has less than three years’ experience, the system will only allow an application for tutoring pharmacy support personnel (PSP)
  • The applicant is linked to a university (U number) and allows the applicant to apply for a maximum of five interns with no PSP
  • There are no training restrictions.

For recording of facilities, the system checks:

  • That the pharmacy account is up to date (in the case of an existing Y-number)
  • GPP was recommended
  • License was issued
  • RP has accepted the appointment on the system – System will terminate appointment of new RP if that RP is still activated at another pharmacy.
  • That the RP’s annual fee account is up to date

Submission of progress reports for pharmacist’s assistants, students, interns, trainees, CSP registration processes and completion of CSP have been carried out online since 2013, with the manual applications being phased out early in 2014.

In 2016, Council will be introducing the last set of online systems, covering cession of contract, change of tutor/facility, registrations of assessors and moderators, and supplementary training.
